Crashing the Net
You won UND’s Cliff “Fido” Purpur Award last year. The award is for the player who works hard and is a creator, so do you think that work ethic rubs off on teammates?
Shane Gersich: “You don’t expect to win any awards, you just play for the team. But it’s a nice award to win. This year, for me, I come in and lead by example and by my work ethic.”
Why did you decide to put your pro career on hold?
SG: “It was a pretty easy decision because it’s such a great place here. We have the best coaching staff and I’m really excited about the guys on the team. We have some unfinished business here and we always want to raise another banner.”
You led the team in points last year. Is there more responsibility to do it again this year?
SG: “I just try to go out there and play my game every night. I try to get on the scoreboard for the guys. But at the same time, being responsible defensively is really important as well and that leads to offense.”
What makes this year’s team unique compared to the teams you’ve been on in the past?
SG: “My freshman year we had a really special team, obviously. This team actually reminds me a lot of that with the depth we have. Every night, we can have different guys getting on the scoresheet.”
